Basic Checklist to Choose a Dog
Let us go over a basic checklist that will help you choose the perfect dog for you and your family.
- Climate
- Landscape
- Purpose
- Maintenance
- Lifestyle
Climate
- If you live in a place that has a warm climate, consider getting a dog with LESS FUR.
- f you live in a place that has a cool climate, cosider getting a dog with MORE/THICK FUR.
The above two points are simple but golden rules.
Landscape
The second factor that you should consider is the landscape of the region your dog will grow in. You can choose almost any dog if you are going to raise him/herin an open field with lots of natural vegetation. But be sure you check out the CLIMATE factor.
If the landscape is too muddy then it is favorable for the dog to have a thinnerfur coat so thatthe mud does not stick to the body and dry up. If it happens, it can form lumps and cause infection.
Purpose
Think of WHY you want a dog. Some might want to adopt a dog for security purposes and others as a companion for their everyday adventures. What is your reason and what will your dog’s PURPOSE be?
If you want a dog for your kids or small children to play with and at the same time protect them, then go for dogs that a big in size.
Bigger dogs are usually more affectionate, more protective and less aggressive. But if you have a small space, then small dogs are a package of cuteness overload!
If you want a security guard as well as a companion, dogs like Rajapalayam or German Shepherd are a good choice.
If the dog is solely for security purposes, then make sure it has the company of at least one otherdog and has good enough space to roam around. This will limit the dog’s temperament and frustration which will help the dog remain healthy and fit, both mentally and physically.
Maintenance
Dogs with more fur require greater maintenance like frequent scrubbing and brushing than dogs with less fur. Furthermore, contrary to popular belief, dogs that have a smaller body size require more maintenance than bigger dogs because they tend to excrete more frequently and also have a slightly weaker immune system in general.
However, larger dogs consume more food and resources. Hence, you can’t let your love for dogs blind you of affordability and financial stability.
Lifestyle
Your everyday lifestyle can impact your dog’s physical and mental state in a large way. You should be able to take time out of your routine for the dog and take him/her for walks, play around the house and/or just cuddle them and rub the good doggo’s belly!
If you are seldom home and work so constantly and relentlessly that you cannot spend time with your dog any more than just feeding it, then please do not get a dog and ruin its life.
